Why I Decided to Stop Using Online Food Delivery Services in New York City

In recent years, online food delivery services have made dining incredibly convenient. With just a few taps, our favorite meals arrive at our doorstep. However, I've chosen to stop using these services, primarily due to the irresponsible behavior of delivery couriers on e-bikes and mopeds who frequently ignore traffic rules, posing a significant threat to public safety.

My journey with online food delivery began with enthusiasm. It was a lifesaver on busy workdays and a delightful indulgence on lazy weekends. But over time, my excitement turned into concern as I witnessed more and more delivery couriers exhibiting reckless behavior on New York City streets. These couriers, often under immense pressure to deliver orders quickly, seem to disregard basic traffic regulations. Their actions endanger their lives and pose a significant threat to pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.

One of the most alarming aspects of this issue is the sheer disregard for traffic signals and pedestrian crossings. It’s common to see delivery couriers speeding through red lights or weaving through pedestrian pathways without considering those on foot. This behavior is not just a minor inconvenience; it’s a serious safety hazard. I’ve experienced close calls while crossing the street, narrowly avoiding collisions with speeding e-bikes. The anxiety and fear of potential accidents have made me acutely aware of the dangers these couriers present.

Moreover, the noise pollution caused by these delivery vehicles is another significant issue. Many e-bikes and mopeds are equipped with loud, disruptive horns used excessively, especially in residential areas. The constant honking and revving of engines at all hours disrupt the peace and tranquility of neighborhoods. It’s disheartening to think that the convenience of food delivery comes at the cost of our community’s well-being.

Another aspect that must be addressed is the need for more accountability. When I reached out to customer service departments of various food delivery companies to express my concerns, the responses were often dismissive or unhelpful. There seems to be a disconnect between the companies and the behavior of their couriers. This lack of accountability means that the reckless behavior continues unchecked, further endangering the public.

The tipping point for me came when a neighbor was struck by a speeding delivery e-bike while crossing the street. This incident was a stark reminder of the potential consequences of irresponsible delivery practices. It made me realize that by continuing to support these services, I was indirectly contributing to a system that prioritizes speed and convenience over safety and responsibility.

Deciding to stop using online food delivery services took work. It required a shift in my routine and a return to traditional methods of dining and cooking. However, the peace of mind that comes from knowing I’m not supporting a system that endangers lives is worth the inconvenience. Now, I prefer to only order from restaurants that offer pick-up within walking distance. This way, I still utilize the convenience of ordering platforms and continue to support local businesses in my neighborhood without encouraging deliveries that fail to adhere to road safety and traffic laws.

I've since discovered new local restaurants offering safer delivery options or convenient pickup, allowing me to enjoy my meals without compromising my values.
